Artist Statement
I make art because I have to. As I look around my world, I have always experienced sudden gusts of passion that I need to express.
As an artist who utilizes a variety of medium, I rely on pastel to illuminate my work. I justify the beauty of my portraits with a tactile attack, however gently, and respect the intensity that connects me intellectually and emotionally through my imagination, eyes and hands.
My process begins with a black and white photograph.
I enlarge and print it on a textured paper that will both hold pastel and allow me to spread the chalk sometimes with a finger, sometimes with my entire hand.
The subject matter that has always inspired me is the naked female form. It has never been my objective to objectify a naked woman, but rather to juxtaposition her vulnerability with her strength and power.
